About the Work

This work, which took 8 months to make, is a poetic reflection of the cultural and commercial flow that continued for centuries between East and West. The structure of the mosaic technique — broken, yet forming a whole when brought together — tells, as it were, the fragmented but unbroken story of the Silk Road. The arch form at the center is not merely an architectural element; it is a passage, a threshold. The scene that appears when we look through this threshold recalls Istanbul's historic identity as a port and its role at the heart of trade. While the boats along the shore carry goods and stories from different geographies, the settlement in the background symbolizes an urban fabric that holds within it the layers of time. The camels on the right, meanwhile, are one of the most powerful symbols of the Silk Road. Advancing patiently, these caravan animals represent not only trade but also the carrying of cultures, beliefs and art. On this journey stretching toward Istanbul, the camels are depicted like silent witnesses bearing the riches of the East to the West. The turquoises and golden tones of the color palette evoke both the elegance of Ottoman art and the splendor of the East. The relationship the mosaic pieces form with the light brings the work to life; it is as if the water ripples, the caravan advances and time continues to flow. Overall, this picture treats Istanbul's role as a bridge on the Silk Road as a point of cultural encounter beyond mere trade. It is both a tribute to the past and a visual narration of that magical moment where civilizations intersect.
